Shawn J. Francis
Shawn graduated from Dalhousie University in 1998 with his Diploma of Dental Hygiene after previously completing a Bachelor of Science (Biology) and Bachelor of Arts (Sociology/Anthropology). Originally from Port aux Basques, Newfoundland, he has lived in Alberta since 2000.
Shawn has completed multiple continuing education courses emphasizing the diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease. He provides a non-surgical option in the treatment and maintenance of periodontal disease. His experience allows him to discuss all manner of dental treatment options with his patients. As all dental hygienists, Shawn’s main goal is to provide his patients with an education on how to care for their oral health. He is a member of the CRDHA and CDHA.
Shawn and his wife are the proud parents of two wonderfully busy children. He enjoys building and using computers, watching movies, and talking about cars. He spends most of his spare time with his family, playing with his kids, and fixing things around the house.
Tamara is a registered dental hygienist and received her hygiene diploma from the University of Alberta. She has worked with all ages, ranging from children to adults, and has excelled in providing dental hygiene care to residents in long-term care facilities, specifically those with Alzheimer’s disease.
She is committed to providing client-centered care, involving and educating her patients during their visits, and is a strong advocate of primary prevention to achieve optimal oral health.
Tamara was born and raised in Edmonton and in her spare time enjoys dancing competitively, horseback riding, and spending time with family and friends.
Cally was born in Hong Kong and came to Canada when she was 7 years old. She is fluent in English and Cantonese. She attained a BSc (Hons) in Toxicology at the University of Toronto in 2005 and realized that conducting scientific research with rats was not what she wanted to do in life. Thus, she went back to school to study dental hygiene and obtained a diploma in 2007.
Cally started her dental hygiene career at the Canadian Forces Base located in Edmonton, and worked with several dental specialists including periodontists, oral surgeons and prosthodontists. She left the Canadian Forces Base in 2010 and joined The Dentists at Northgate.
Cally has found dental hygiene to be a rewarding and fulfilling career. She spends her spare time with her lovely husband and beautiful daughter.
Mohammed graduated in 2008 obtaining a diploma in dental hygiene from a community college in Toronto. After graduation he moved to northern BC to work in an underserved town of Dawson Creek. There he worked with a periodontist gaining valuable experience in treating patients with vast dental hygiene treatment needs. Mohammed has been working with us ever since he moved his family to Edmonton in 2010.
He is passionate about dentistry which is reflected in his detail oriented approach when treating his patients and collaborating with dentists ensuring patients’ dental and hygiene treatment needs are fulfilled in a seamless manner.
Prior to entry in dental hygiene Mohammed held a dentistry degree from his home country. He will be going to University of Alberta in summer of 2016 to complete his dentistry degree to become a fully licensed dentist in Canada. We wish him all the best and look forward to having him back on our team as a dentist.
Azin received her diploma in dental hygiene from the University of Alberta in 2011.
She believes in customizing her approach to suit the unique oral needs of her patients with the goal of helping her clients improve their oral health.
She absolutely loves seeing her efforts result in an increase in her patients’ quality of life. Azin also prides herself in being gentle with her patients as she believes every patient deserves to have the best dental hygiene experience possible for their situation. In her free time she enjoys baking, spending time with her family and volunteering with senior citizens in the community.
Linda graduated from the University of Alberta with studies in both dental hygiene and the Bachelor of Science in nursing programs, and has over 20 years of experience as a registered dental hygienist. She strives to provide gentle care, believes that education and respect are essential to a positive dental experience and is committed to providing the most beneficial and effective hygiene treatment while building long-term, trusting relationships with her clients.
Her career has given her the opportunity to volunteer on three different expeditions to Nicaragua to provide dental care to those in need, and hopes to volunteer again soon. In her spare time, Linda enjoys spending time with family, enjoying the arts and culture of Edmonton, travelling, volunteering and practicing yoga.
Jessica is originally from Vancouver, B.C. She has been living in Edmonton for 3 years now. After 4 years of experience as a Dental Assistant, Jessica decided to pursue a career in Dental Hygiene. Jessica studied at Oxford College in Ontario and became a Registered Dental Hygienist in September 2010. She is passionate about education and is still studying part time to accomplish her BSc Specialized in Dental Hygiene.
Jessica’s goal is to provide quality care to her patients in a gentle and respectful manner. She believes in being thorough and stresses how important education is. Jessica finds it very rewarding to help her patients and see the difference in their quality of life.
Jessica has spent some time volunteering at dental offices in Ethiopia. Her favourite thing to do is travel. She loves adventure, whether it is flying a plane, snowboarding on a mountain, or scuba diving in the ocean!
Jose (Jay) L. Ponciano graduated at the University of Alberta in the Dental Hygiene Program in 1999. Shortly after graduation, Jay moved to Calgary, Alberta where he had many opportunities as a registered dental hygienist to practice at various dental settings such as in general dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, neuromuscular dentistry and periodontics for over 17 years. Although Jay is a committed dental clinician, he pursued his passion in fine arts at The College of Fine Art and Design (ACAD), Calgary, Alberta in 2003. Jay received advanced training and certification to administer local anesthetics, ultrasonic therapy, laser assisted periodontal therapy (LAPT), cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) radiology, sleep apnea and nutrition. He believes in life-long learning and he continually looks forward to improve his knowledge and clinical skills by staying up-to- date with the latest technologies and advancements in dentistry through continuing education courses. Being a dental hygienist allows Jay to partner with his clients in helping them achieve optimal oral health in a relaxed and caring manner. In addition, Jay believes in coaching his clients about the link between healthy gums and total body health.
In the spring of 2016, Jay decided to move back to Edmonton where he grew up to be closer to his amazing parents and growing family. He is proud of his Filipino heritage and he is fluent in Tagalog. Jay is excited and grateful to be given the opportunity to be apart of The Dentists at Northgate family.
Outside of work, Jay enjoys spending quality time with family, his two beautiful dogs and his amazing friends. He continues to find inspirations for his passion in fine arts
and music. In his spare time, Jay enjoys working out, yoga, meditation, walking with his fluffy dogs, hiking, biking, snowboarding and traveling.
Joelle is a caring, friendly and easily approachable person. Born and raised in Edmonton she speaks fluently in both French and English. Joelle graduated from the University of Alberta 10 years ago with a bachelors of science specializing in dental hygiene. Having a great understanding of the interrelation that oral health and total body health have, she finds great importance in getting to know her patient. understanding their health needs and working as a team to improve their oral health, overall health and hence quality of life. Having worked in the past in a clinic dealing specifically with high anxiety patient, comfort and wellness is a priority to her at all times.
Outside of work Joelle also has her personal training certificate and loves being active, traveling, cooking and spending time with her family. She loves children, and just became a mom to a little girl in this last year. Being a mom has been the most amazing experience thus far, she looks forward to every new adventures this will bring.
She is excited to work with new patients and looks forward to helping improve their health while building new long lasting relationships.
Rebecca was born and raised in Edmonton and went to the University of Alberta for her diploma in Dental Hygiene. She is very committed to making her patients feel comfortable at their appointments and making sure their concerns and questions are heard. Rebecca believes that being able to build relationships with patients is one of the most important and enjoyable aspects of her career. Rebecca speaks Arabic as a second language and enjoys travelling to Lebanon during summers to visit relatives. She loves spending time with her big family, being with friends, practising yoga and being outdoors.
Wilson, through motivation and drive, received his diploma in dental hygiene from the University of Alberta where he received advanced training and certification in nutrition evaluation, ultrasonic therapy, and administration of local anesthetics.
The provocative and insightful details he highlights brings the patients wanting to know more. Not only do they understand their predicament better, they also discover the untapped potential that resides within themselves to improve their own oral health.
Traveling and snowboarding continues to be his outlet after a long rewarding day by the dental chair. Each place always seems to create new experiences and memories in which he loves to share whenever he gets the chance to.
